Young people were among the groups most affected by COVID-19, experiencing heightened mental health challenges, reduced employment opportunities, disengagement from education and training, and increased anxiety about the future.

This project sought to understand the impacts of COVID-19 on young people in the Latrobe Valley.

The 2020 Youth Engagement in Latrobe — Impact of COVID-19 report highlighted the need for young people to share their own experiences. Working with local partners, young people consulted their peers to identify unmet needs and future priorities.

Two key areas emerged
01

Safe, accessible spaces for youth connection

02

Youth-friendly, respectful health services

In response, the Assembly partnered with Monash University medical students to explore young people's distrust of health professionals and improve support during health appointments.

This work led to the co-design of a Youth Healthcare Journal and identified the need for youth-led training to improve communication, trust, and quality of care.
